JMF Milestones

Newborn Screening for Primary Immunodeficiencies launched in the State of Wisconsin. Every baby born in the state in 2008 was screened. A newborn with a combined Immunodeficiency disease was identified and received a life saving bone marrow transplant

Established Jeffrey Modell Centers Network is comprised of 518 Expert Physicians, at 196 academic teaching hospitals, serving 191 cities, 68 countries, and spanning 6 continents.

Jeffrey Modell Immunology Center at Harvard Medical School established and academic programs underway

Established $12 million funding and research collaboration with 4 of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Organized World Health Organization/IUIS Symposia in France, England, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Hungary, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, attended by pre-eminent immunologists and researchers worldwide

Robert A. Good/Jeffrey Modell International Fellowship Program awarded four fellowships, funding the brightest young investigators around the world, focused on PI and stem cell transplantation

Endowed Chairs in Pediatric Immunology Research established at Children's Hospital Seattle and Children's Hospital Boston

Research and Post-Doctoral Fellowships awarded at Mount Sinai Division of Clinical Immunology, Rockefeller University, University of Washington School of Medicine, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Funded Joint Research Collaboration with NIH, Affymetrix, and JMF for Newborn Screening of SCID using microarray technology


Annual PI Awareness Week established through a Joint Senate Resolution in the United States Congress

Established PI Awareness Day at EU Parliament

JMF awarded contract from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct national campaign for physician education and public awareness of PI

Publishing of six studies in major scientific journal, on the impact of physician education and public awareness on referrals, testing, diagnosis, and treatment of PI, and a comparison of quality of life issues and economic impact for diagnosed and undiagnosed patients with PI.

African Society for Immunodeficiencies established

Asian Society for Primary Immunodeficiencies established and expanded to include several Middle East countries and most of Asia

Established "J" Project physician society in Eastern Europe

Canadian Immunodeficiency Network established

Produced Public Service Announcements for television, print, radio, web, and airports, to continue to bring attention to quality of life issues for patients, particularly children, with PI.

Distributed educational materials including the 10 Warning Signs Poster, Immune System Poster, and Physician Algorithm to family practitioners, pediatricians and public health departments in every state nationwide

10 Warning Signs Poster available in more than 35 countries and 30 languages

Immune System Poster Kit sent to elementary and middle school nurses and day care centers nationwide

Established website and hotline (1-866-INFO-4-PI) for patients and their families, physicians, researchers, government officials, pharmaceutical companies, industry, and the general public to be able to quickly and seamlessly access information on PI diseases

Physician symposia organized at academic teaching hospitals in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia

Delivered keynote address to Council for Harvard Medicine Annual Meeting

Presented quality of life and economic impact data to Managed Care Network of senior executives and medical directors of private and Medicare/Medicaid health plans nationwide and the leadership of pharmacy groups representing over 150 million covered lives


Infusion rooms enhanced at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York and Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA

Advocated before Congress for increased research resulting in $5 million in NIH research collaborations, $1.4 million grant for pilot program in minority outreach, and $12.8 million for PI research consortium

17 years of advocacy for PI before Senate and House Appropriations Committees on Health Participated in White House briefing banning genetic discrimination in the workplace

Appeared before the European Union Parliament to advocate for a European Physician Education and Public Awareness Campaign


Received highest 4 star rating for the last 5 years from Charity Navigator, America's premier independent charity evaluator

Received Public Service Award from American Association of Immunologists (AAI)

Vicki and Fred Modell received the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) Award at the International Congress of Immunology, Montreal, Canada, in honor of their contributions to the field of immunology. The award was given only once before, to Bill and Melinda Gates of the Gates Foundation
