I am 27 and was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency about a month and half ago - I started IVIG 4 weeks ago & have had some luck with it, but I find I'm still getting sick towards the end of the 4 week interval between my infusions. At my job, people commonly come in sick, very sick, with respiratory illnesses and I am having trouble staying away from these people when they are sick without being labeled as antisocial or other not so nice terms that don't need to be put up on this site. I am a very private person and would prefer to not have to tell everyone that I have CVID & go into the whole explanation as to what it is exactly. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience that could aid me in this situation? I'd really appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

There is an alternative to IVIG, where the medication is given once a week through a two hour injection with a battery pack. I have chosen this over IVIG because I was warned that often people crash by week 4. I have also heard this type of treatment has less peaks and valleys. Good Luck. Lisa

Hello, you write that you are always getting sick in the interval between the infusions. Perhaps it would help if you would have a shorter interval - three weeks. I would ask the immunologist whether this is possible for you. I come from Germany and I am doing my own subcutaneous infusions (under the skin) with a small pump since 6 years now. This holds the immunoglobulin levels more constant all the time. And you are more independent - you can take the infusion with you in holidays, you can do this treatment in the evening hours or weekends and have not to miss working time and so on. Best wishes from Germany and please ask if I can help in any way. Eva

I feel your pain! I, too, have the same issue...near week 4 I'm drained and sick. The best you can do is let Human Resources know, thru a medical note, that you have a compromised immune system. HR will let your supervisors know, explaining that this confidential. I understand wanting to be a private person, but this is your health we are talking about. Stressing about work and what people think only compromises your immune system more. Going thru the proper channels at work will make your life easier there at least. Good Luck! LC

Take it from me, get a note from your doctor and let your supervisor and HR know what is going on. I lost my job because of all my time lost. In the meantime, get a lawyer and give him/her all the info just to be on the safe side. It sucks, but you do have options in case your employer starts playing around with you. LC
