:quest:TextTextWe have 2 boys with XLA and our oldest gets sinus infections (3 since about June) and I don't know what to do.  Is this something common to PID?  If so how have people treated them. Thanks for any help.  Desiree

My son has sinus trouble continuely.  We have found nothing that ever gets rid of it completely.  We just keep the kleenexes handy.  I am sorry I couldn't help more.

I think sinus infections are fairly common to PID, at least my type. I have found some ways to try to prevent them and to get over them more quickly that may or may not work for you and your sons. I use an Alkalol nasal rinse every morning in the shower (this is available without a prescription from most pharmacists) -- it's like Listerine for your nose Smile  When I start to feel sinus pressure at the start of inflammation, I use a nasal steroid (Flonase). Then, if it seems like I'm getting increased post-nasal drip that's changing colors and an infection is on it's way, my doctor likes to place me on antibiotics early. My daughter was frequently ill with sinus infections until she was about 6 and had a tonsillectomy; I treat her with the Flonase when she complains of sinus headaches or ear pressure and then give her decongestants. Since she doesn't have a PID, that works for her 9 out of 10 times.

My son is 10 years old and was diagnosed with IGG, IGA, and IGM deficeincy as well as subclasses.  He has chronic reoccurring sinusitis, so I know what you are going through.  Antonio has just finishe 40 days of antibiotics and finally clear.  He had almost constant sinusitis and frequent nosed bleeds.  We use a cool mist vaporizor every night, ayr gel in each nostril morning and night, and ocean spray with bactroban, he is also on zyrtec for the allergic rhynitis.  He had tonsils and addenoids out when 4 and sinus surgery last June hense why the healing time is so long this time.  He is always treated for sinus infections with 21 days of antibiotics because anaerobic bacteria is harder to fight for immuno supressed patients.  Also just in case it pertains, GERD is usually associated with reoccuring sinusitis in kids.  My son never complained of his belly but was hoarse, had wet burbs, hiccups, light snoring, and bad breath.... a PH probe showed he refluxed 117 times in 24 hrs all the way into the sinus cavity.  My email is xcepshnlgirl@yahoo.com if anyone needs more info.  Hope it helps! HUGS!!!

yes I was told that Having PID can effect your sinus. my son has low IGA Low IGM IGG Sub class. In his case it has effected his sinus's, he has had 3 mayor surgergies on the sinus's, they just rescoped him a couple of weeks ago and the left side was blocked their plan of attack will be scanning the sinus again then possiable surgery again. In my sons case they do these surgergies because they have not been able to control the infections with antbiodicts or nasal sprays and rinses. I know in most cases they do sinus surgery as last resort and that was our case nothing else was helping.

  Hi
I have PID,, Igg subclass 1 & 3 deficiencies and get around 3-5 sinus infections a year... I used to get
12-15 ( thats more than one a month)
sinus and other upper respiratory infections are VERY COMMON with those with PID's
What helped me was taking Zyrtec and Nasacort Aq
each day to help keep the allergies under control
Hope this helps a bit
God bless
Rose

I have found out the hard way that some sinus infections are FUNGAL and the sinuses need to be cultured and allowed to " grow" for at least 1-2 weeks for proper diagnosis.
Ask your ENT to culture the sinuses for fungus ( mold)
as I realized  we have PID
Primary Immune Deficiencies, AIDS people have ACQUIRED immune deficiencies and BOTH are very prone to FUNGAL INFECTIONS..
I am on an Anti-Fungal right now,

I have a 9 year old that has recurring sinus infections, although I swear it is the same one from years ago that never resolved.  The most recent infection he was given 6 weeks of augmentin, and while on it he got strep throat which has been a whole other  issue in of itself.

He just had a f/u scan of his sinuses and it looks worse that before the rx

we use a sinus wash, and cool mist humidifer and several prescriptions, too many to wite
is there any suggestions?

also I may be paranoid, but has anyone had or asked to have there liver panel done , is it an unreasonable request when he has been on so many rx and is currently

thanks
Anne

Infections of the sinuses can be FUNGAL
When sinus infection recur and recur and not responding to anti-biotics, CULTURE FOR FUNGUS is necessary,, but the culture has to be marked
" Fungal" and need to be cultured for 1-2 weeks

I have PID and have had numerous, oh too numerous sinus infections to count. but TWO WERE FUNGAL
and only diagnosed with sinus cultures ALLOWED TO GROW FOR AT LEAST 1-2 weeks and MARKED,, TEST FOR FUNGUS

God bless all

I have been exposed to great amounts of mold, as well as silica dust, and now cannot seem to fight infections once an irritant or allergen gets in my nasal passages. I'm pretty good about using my nasal rinses, but to no avail. Last year, my Endocrinologist tested me and found that my total IgA was around 67, with one reading being 17 or 18. I have yet to find a doctor who knows how to treat this? Any suggestions?
