If you use immunoglobulin (IG) therapy to treat Primary Immunodeficiency, it may seem confusing or stressful to travel with it. That’s why we’re sharing a few helpful tips for traveling with IG therapy to help make your trip as smooth and stress-free as possible!

Obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity

Consult with your medical provider to obtain a letter of medical necessity that includes your diagnosis, the medications you take, and any supplies you need to carry.

Since the medication you’re traveling with may fall outside the typical security guidelines, this will help you communicate about your IG therapy as you navigate airport security and customs.

Partner with your Specialty Infusion Provider

Work with your specialty infusion provider to arrange for your supplies to be shipped to your destination. They can also help coordinate infusions at a local facility if needed.

Make sure you give them as much advance notice as you can! This will ensure that you receive what you need on time, allowing you to enjoy your adventures without stress.

Purchase Protective and Portable Packaging

Invest in insulated travel bags and portable coolers designated for medications. Make sure your supplies are packed securely to maintain proper temperature during transit.

Keep your cooler with you! If you’re flying, don’t transport your IG therapy in your checked luggage because of potential temperature shifts or losses.

Plan Ahead for Airport Screening

If you’re flying within the United States, notify TSA upon arrival at security about your medical supplies. Carry your letter of medical necessity and keep medications in their original packaging for easy identification at security checkpoints.

If you’re unsure about any of the medical equipment you’re traveling with or have questions about the process you can reach out to TSA Cares for assistance.
